About MOZZIES
A not-for-profit organisation connecting two nations through culture, education and friendship.
What is Mozzies
The Mongolia Australia Society is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation established in 1998.
The Society’s mission is to promote cooperation and friendship between Mongolia and Australia, achieved by strengthening the warm people-to-people and institutional links between the two countries.
The Society is affectionately known as the “Mozzies Association” in honour of its core group of members — the Mongolian Aussies (Mozzies) — who have lived, worked or studied in Australia.
The Society aims to
- Serve as a network of Mongolian alumni of Australian universities, nurturing personal and professional links and encouraging the sharing of skills and knowledge
- Celebrate the long-term friendship and cultural link with Australia through a diverse program of activities, such as events to commemorate Australia Day, the Melbourne Cup and the Australian Open
- Share news, information and resources with its members and the wider community through its website, newsletter and email updates
- Act as an ambassador for Australia in Mongolia and actively promote cooperation between the two countries, especially by maintaining a close relationship with Australian institutions
- Promote the various Australian scholarship options available to Mongolian students, and support applicants and returned students
- Undertake targeted projects that contribute to the development of the Mongolia–Australia relationship and both societies
Structure
The main governing body of the Society is the Board, made up of 11 members including the President and Executive Director. The Board meets quarterly and provides hands-on support to guide the Society’s activities.
The President, Mr D. Tsogtbaatar, is also a Member of the Parliament of Mongolia. A graduate of the Australian National University in 1998, he was one of the first Mozzies and one of the most successful.
The Executive Director, Ms R. Altangerel, is a graduate of the Australian National University and Project Director of MERIT. She is appointed by the Board to manage the day-to-day activities of the Society.
The Society also comprises four committees working to achieve its objectives: the Social Activities Committee, Membership Committee, Foreign Relations Committee, and Committee for Working with the Australian Community.
The Society currently has over 200 members. Many have benefited from scholarship programs such as the AusAID-funded Australian Development Scholarships and Australian Leadership Awards. Family members of Mozzies are also an important part of the organisation.
